Ever looked at your Kundli and wondered what all those planets, houses and signs actually mean?

A Vedic birth chart may look complicated at first, but its basic structure is surprisingly simple. Once you understand a few key elements, you can start making sense of your Kundli.

Let's break it down.

1. Start With Your Lagna

The first thing to look for is your Lagna, or Ascendant.

Your Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the time of your birth. It forms the foundation of your birth chart and determines the arrangement of the 12 houses.

It is associated with your personality, appearance, temperament and general approach to life.

Think of the Lagna as the starting point of your Kundli.

2. Understand the 12 Houses

Every house represents a different area of life.

House

Represents

1st

Self & personality

2nd

Wealth & family

3rd

Courage & communication

4th

Home & comfort

5th

Education & creativity

6th

Work & competition

7th

Marriage & partnerships

8th

Transformation & inheritance

9th

Fortune & higher learning

10th

Career & profession

11th

Income & gains

12th

Expenses & foreign connections

So, if you want to understand career, you will pay particular attention to the 10th house. For marriage, the 7th house becomes especially important.

But there is more to the story.

3. Look at the Planets

The nine major planetary influences used in Vedic astrology are the Navagraha:

Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.

Each planet represents different qualities.

For example:

  • Sun – confidence, authority and leadership

  • Moon – emotions and mind

  • Mars – energy and courage

  • Mercury – communication and intelligence

  • Jupiter – wisdom and expansion

  • Venus – relationships and comforts

  • Saturn – discipline and perseverance

  • Rahu & Ketu – unconventional experiences, desires and detachment

The meaning of a planet changes depending on which sign and house it occupies.

4. Don't Forget the Zodiac Signs

The 12 zodiac signs provide the environment through which planets express themselves.

For example, Mars represents energy and action, but Mars in Aries may express itself differently from Mars in Libra.

This is why simply saying “Mars is good” or “Saturn is bad” is an oversimplification.

The complete chart matters.

5. Look at Planetary Aspects (Drishti)

A planet doesn't influence only the house where it is placed.

Through Drishti, or planetary aspects, it can also influence other houses.

For example, Jupiter has special aspects on the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from its position, while Saturn has special aspects on the 3rd, 7th and 10th.

This is one reason an apparently empty house can still be significant.

6. Finally, Look at Dashas

Your birth chart shows the planetary arrangement at birth, but Dashas help astrologers understand timing.

The Vimshottari Dasha system, for example, divides life into planetary periods.

The results of a particular period depend on the planet's position, strength, house ownership and other factors in the birth chart.

This is where birth chart interpretation becomes much more interesting.

The Golden Rule of Kundli Reading

Never judge your life from a single planetary placement.

Seeing Saturn in the 10th house, for example, does not automatically mean career problems.

A proper analysis considers:

Lagna + Houses + Signs + Planets + House Lords + Drishti + Dashas

The interaction between these factors creates the unique story of your birth chart.

Want to Understand Your Own Kundli?

Learning the basics can help you understand your chart, but a complete Vedic astrology analysis requires looking at the planetary combinations and their timing together.

At Lagna Drishti, we aim to make Vedic astrology easier to understand by looking at the birth chart as a whole rather than relying on isolated placements.

Your Kundli is more than a collection of planets. It is a map of possibilities—and understanding that map is the first step.
